  4. View your tax computation
  5. Choose the Filing plan of your choise and make the payment.
  6. You can then generate the ITR form in PDF format and/or XML format.

  8. Receive the Acknowledgement (if return is signed digitally) or the ITR-V (if not)

Digitial Signature is not mandatory for e-filing tax returns

  1. Manish, do you have any idea to contact local IT office to get seal instead of sending the verified forms to the given address? It seems their practice have been changed from this year and trying to make another government department profitable.

    • Well, the income tax department do conduct Income Tax Return Filing Camps in various cities. You can get the schedule and venue from local newspapers. Click here to find the address of the Local Income Tax Offices (note : this is a Government Website, so please open it in IE as many of these sites do not work properly on non-IE browsers 😉 )

Yes, government departments are becoming net-savvy. Look at IRCTC for instance or Tax Services offered by NSDL. Very soon Income Tax Department will also have a very user friendly website and processes.

  2. Hi Manish,
    Thanks for this useful article.
I did follow the steps to the T.
    However, I didn't use a digital signature.
When I tried to open the ITR-V form that I downloaded, it's asking me for a document password.
What am I supposed to put in as a password? There is no guidance on the efiling site as well.
    Thanks,
    Faiz

    • Hi Faiz,

Please let us know from where you uploaded the ITR XML. If you uploaded it on Income Tax Site directly, then the password is a combination of your PAN number (lower case) and your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. For example, if the pan is AAAAA0000A and the date of birth is 10-Jan-2008, then the password will be aaaaa0000a10012008.
